What are the best beginner road (commuting) bikes?

I'm thinking of getting my first bike. I want it to look good (sporty/aggressive) as well as being in the mid-range when concerning power because as much as i respect bikes and the danger they pose, I don't want to be seen frolicking around on a 250. I'm about 5'8'' and around 85kg. Iv taken a liking to the Kawasaki Ninja 650R but I don't like the carrot-in-my-*** upright sitting position.
